Schmidt started working on scale miniatures in 1994, he makes replicas of historic and modern art ceramics for miniature museums and collectors. In order to create his miniatures, he has developed custom tools and techniques used in place of his fingers. Schmidt is known for mastering glaze technology which results in, for example, a to scale craquelure, a network of fine surface cracks. Schmidt also makes full scale functional porcelain pottery influenced by Celtic designs.
