In order to create his miniatures, he has developed custom tools and techniques used in place of his fingers. Schmidt is known for mastering glaze technology which results in, for example, a to scale craquelure, a network of fine surface cracks. Schmidt also makes full scale functional porcelain pottery influenced by Celtic designs.
