BIOGRAPHY

Lee McCarty and his wife, Pup McCarty, are known for wheel-thrown stoneware functional pottery. Surface techniques are minimal. Signature glazes include nutmeg brown, cobalt blue, and jade. The husband and wife team created work together for over 50 years at their Merigold, Mississippi studio.

In 1998, godson's Jamie and Steven Smith apprenticed with the McCartys. The Smith brothers took over production of the McCartys’ signature pottery after the McCarty's passed.

Typical Marks

In addition to "McCartys" on the bottom of each piece, McCartys pottery can be identified by the 'river', a small black wavy line representing the Mississippi River on most functional pieces.
