Nolan Baumgartner is known for soda fired functional porcelain vessel forms that include lidded jars sometimes utilizing a reticulated upper rim. The jar lid has a finial set within the rim, the finial showing above. The jar body is surrounded with a stylized repeated glaze and slip motif.

Baumgartner states, “The surface is defined with arches, ellipses, and “lotus” petals that I render in slips and glaze. …After the precise formation and decoration, the elements and atmosphere of the soda kiln complete the work…”[1]
