Samuel Thompson is known for wheel-thrown functional pottery and ceramic jewelry which are fired in a gas reduction kiln. Thompson uses a variety of earth toned glazes.

Thompson's jewelry, known as “gorgets”, were based on Native American jewelry artifacts found by Thompson in Tennessee. Appearing in browns, charcoals, and greens, Thompson's pendant necklaces and jewelry feature a variety of imagery, including but not limited to the turkey, spider, woodpecker, rattlesnake, and sun circle.
