Patti Sandberg is known for functional work inspired by animals and her collection of vintage housewares. These influenced the colors and designs of her work.

Early work used low fired terra cotta and later work used cone 6 porcelain. Sandberg employed multiple glaze firings to achieve abstract landscapes and applied decals of vintage illustrations of animals.

Sandberg was known for working in both small and large scale.  Her sculpture was influenced by broad themes including urban architecture and woodland animals. Sandberg incorporated mixed materials into these works including flocking and felt.

 While at the Maine College of Art Sandberg studied with Marian Baker, Lucy Breslin, and Mark Johnson. She went on to become an influential ceramics teacher at the same institution.
