Carl Paak was known for producing both functional and sculptural ceramics. From 1950 through 1970 he focused on functional work then his focus was on sculptures in the 1970s and 1980s. He used both stoneware and porcelain sometimes throwing the pieces on the wheel and at others using various hand building techniques.

Paak’s many surface technique experiments included those impressing stones and glass into the clay and the use of intricate underglaze paintings.
