BIOGRAPHY

Jan Lee in most well known for her wheel thrown Naked Raku fired pieces. They are first burnished and then coated with terra sigillata, bisque fired, and coated with a layer of slip and glaze. Firings take place in a raku kiln.

When the glaze matures the form is removed and placed in a container with wood shavings where it smokes and burns. After the form is completely cool the slip/glaze layer is peeled away.  This results in a surface marked with patterns and colors created by the fire and smoke during the firing process.

In additon, she produced a line of functional pieces using either stoneware or terra cotta. These pieces are glazed using a majolica type technique.
