BIOGRAPHY

Matthew Hyleck is known for wheel-thrown reduction fired stoneware or porcelain utilitarian pottery. Signature forms are plates, platters, drinking vessels, and bottles. Surface techniques include colored slips (liquid clay) as the preliminary design element and shino glazes that develop in reduction firing. Vertical, horizontal and diagonal line work on exterior surfaces is achieved by painting wax lines directly over the glazes prior to firing. Harder edged line work typically retains an orange hue in the finished state.

Hyleck bisque fires to cone 04 (1922°F) in an electric kiln.  Glaze firing is completed to cone 10 (2350F) in a propane-fueled downdraft reduction kiln.
