PRIMARY WORK EXPERIENCE

1987 Studio potter

1988-1992 Partner A.B. Macomber Pottery, Gloucester, Massachusetts

Sam Taylor, a self-taught potter, uses stoneware and porcelain to create a wide range of functional objects. Each piece is thrown and then fired in a wood fueled kiln, sometimes adding salt to the chamber during the firing. From 1988 to 1998 he fired his work in a two-chamber wood fired climbing kiln at Stonepool Pottery with the work of Mark Shapiro and Michael Kline. In 1998 he built his own single chamber wood fired Naborigami style kiln.

Taylor is inspired by the Shaker aesthetic and the innovative nature of their designs. Taylor studied with Michael Simon and has considered him a mentor throughout his career. Together these influences can be seen in Taylor’s simple clean forms that he reuses and refines.
